Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater named after Gorky – a city theatre striking the visitor with its magnificent interior and rich historical past. This place should be visited by those who is interested in city architecture, in order to get acquainted with classics of the Russian literature, to see the ‘real’ Russian theater. This theater has been performing in Nizhny Novgorod since 1798. The stage hosts the M. Gorky theater festival. The repertoire of theater includes plays by Gorky, Ostrovsky, Bulgakov, Saltykov-Shchedrin, performances based on novels by Kuprin. The modern dramatic art is presented by Galceran, Camoletti or Kishon. The repertoire also provides an opportunity to see the plays of Molière, Shakespeare and Wilde.

If you walk along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya St., approach the theater building to learn that here, on the opening day of the National Exhibition (1896) the great Russian bass Fedor Shalyapin sang. The friendly shining show-windows exhibit the repertoire plan for two months ahead.

The theater has been performing since 1935. Before that, there was “the Folk's House" – the center of culture and education in Nizhny Novgorod in the beginning of the 20th century. Gorky and Shalyapin provided financial aid in construction. The theater annually hosts the National Opera and Ballet Art Festival called "The Boldino Autumn'.

We advise to learn about actors and other performances, novels which formed the libretto basis. Then you will be able to enjoy the classical opera, the operetta or to note all details of performing art of the ballet troupe.

Is a small theater where students of the Nizhny Novgorod theatrical school participate in plays. Here young actors do not just play in a performance, they also take examinations. You will be able to get acquainted with new forms of theater and see future stars of the Russian stage. Don't be surprised when Molière plays, that you have always loved, would suddenly turn into performance of horror.

Here all feelings are genuine, acting of young actors is sincere and free from stereotypes.

The theater is named after the Great Russian actor Evgeniy Yevstigneyev who studied in the Nizhny Novgorod theatrical school. You can learn more about him here.

Is the youth theater providing an experimental view of art. This place is for those who want to be surprised. Eternal subjects, dialogue with the viewer without mask and "a glass wall": you can find all this at CTS. All performances are created by different directors who can make their ideas come true on the "independent" stage. One more advantage of this place is an opportunity to debate after the performance. This experimental theater is situated in Varvarskaya Street, 32d.
